Anyone work with resin-cast tires?

drag car contest project is moving along smoothly... I picked up a set of resin cast "wrinkle-wall" slicks (ie. they're cast hard, with hand-made "wrinkles" in the sidewall...) And this will be my first time working with resin of any kind.

1. Should I paint this any different, being resin? I was thinking of actually buying "rubber" coloured black testor's paint, but would just regular flat black look okay?

2. Can I sand them down normally and will it still look OK if I do?

3. I also picked up a set of Weld drag wheels for the project that are resin cast... and they're slightly too big for the tires!!! Just the outermost ridge of the wheels... would it be safe to sand the inside of the tires a few thousandths so the wheels will sink in, or should I just give up and look for different wheels? These wheels are PERFECT for this project

Resin is just a type of plastic. As far as painting and sanding, it's not much different than styrene. For glue, regular model glue won't work very well though, use super glue. You shouldn't have any problems.

hmm you know I think I'll just go ahead and sand, cuz I guess I can always flip the messed up side to the inside... I'm just worried about messing up the tires, I paid a fair bit for em... thanks.

If you do screw it up, you can always putty it back up to normal.

I wouldn't use the Testors Rubber color for them, it's too brown.
Try to match to black color and sheen of whatever tires you are using on the front.
Don't forget to prime them before painting... - Mark

I used "grimy black", a railroad color, to paint my resin tires. That's the suggestion I got from reading other message boards. Lots of resin tires available for aircraft and armor and that is the paint they use. Flat black is apparently one of the worst colors you can paint resin tires.



Sanding is fine, however be careful not to make the hole out-of-round.

Tires are never really black, instead they are a darkdark grey color. When i have to paint tires , i usually mix flatblack with ( for starters) 1/4 flat grey. If it´s still too black, add grey. Get me right, the tire still looks black, but the hue makes it look more rubber-like convincing!
