2002 Monte Carlo LS 3.4 Upgrades

Hey all!

I'm starting out to be a car enthusiast, with an extreme interest in learning the engineering/performance/modifying of cars. Only problem, I am having a hard time finding good sources of information, nor do I know anyone that works on cars.

Anyways, I own a 2002 Monte Carlo LS. For all I know, it hasn't been modified at all by previous owner. What would be the best essential upgrades -ad hoc performance, engine life, exhaust, practical appearence - I can get for a good price. If at all, several moderate parts rather than one really expensive but good part, if that makes sense.

I am a student without a job. I can afford to spend about $1000 on various pieces for now.

Thanks.

Any suggestions where I can get a good set of headers or a CAI?

That's the problem, I don't own a 3800 engine. I wish though, heh.
