Questions about 97 honda HX
You may have read my other thread about models but I think I found the model that I like the most. There is a Civic HX a couple miles away from my house that I really like. It has the VTech E engine, and CVT, averaging around 38 in the city and 44 highway mpg. Im trying to compare prices with other HX with close years and I cant find any. Is this an unpopular model or do people keep these things till there wheels fall off.
On a side note what do you guys think of the CVT transmission. I took a test drive and I thought it was awesome. Do CVT break down alot, are they really expensive to repair if they do, and what our your general thoughts on them. I know everyone love the VTech engines but if they break down are they really expensive to fix as well? Lastly the car is priced at 6,800 with 92,000 miles on it. It is in exellent condition and has no dent or scraches. Everyone thinks im crazy to pay this much for car thats 8 years old and with this many miles on it. Yet I think that if i could get the saleman to drop it down to maybe 6000 it would be perfect. I know that Honda realiablity factor plus the fact that it is the blue book value of the vechicle say its a good deal. Only downfall is it has no AC (Wisconsin, not always hot but would be nice). What do you think about this, good deal or keep looking? Thanks in advance |

Re: Questions about 97 honda HX
if your looking for just a gas saver vehicle...it wouldn't be a bad car to get, cvt trans isn't the best trans out there, but it helps w/ the whole gas ordeal...the Vtec-E wouldn't be too expensive to maintain, or fix if anything would happend to it, considering it is the "economic" version of vtec and does not have as many parts to it, but droping the price down to about 6 might be hard...but would be a good deal if the car is as flawless as you say it is

Re: Questions about 97 honda HX
Also I thought the VTEC-E ment it was just a cleaner burning engine not that it was the cheaper version of the VTECH.

I've looked at two Civic HX's, both with CVT instead of the 5-speed. Keep in mind that the Civic HX was the first vehicle in America to be offered with a CVT. I've heard there have been problems with them - maybe the one you saw was fine, but the one I drove that had 115,000 miles on it had a distinct stumble at points in its acceleration. Yes, I think a CVT would be expensive to fix because you'd have to take it to a Honda dealer, and you know how much dealers charge for repairs . . . I doubt you'll have many problems with the engine, it's just a VTEC that burns a leaner mix. From what I've heard, pretty much all the parts are the same. As for talking down the price - the lack of A/C might let you get 'im down to 6500 or so. Good luck!

Re: Questions about 97 honda HX
nope...vtec-e doesn't have a 3'rd lobe on its intake...its just 2 lobes per cyl, so the parts aren't the same....and as dealer servicing cvt trannys....im pretty sure an independent shop can work on it for a cheaper labor price, as long as they have chiltons, mitchell or all data...they should be fine
