2000 Stratus SE

Just bought a 2000 stratus SE. I was driving down the highway and the tranny seemed to just quit working. As the car slowed down it reingauged. I pulled over and shut the car off and when I went to restart the car it was like the battery was dead. As I sat there with the key on the power slowly came back on but not enough to turn the car over. I got a boost and the car started right up but when I put the car in gear it bucked and then would not shift past first gear. When I came to a stop sign the car died requiring another boost. Fortunately I wasn't far from home and was able to get it there with out stopping. Any ideas would be great
