1992 explorer

hey all... 92 exp. 230k+ on chassis... 80k on motor.. automatic tranny.

problem ... ran it out of gas the other day and it hasnt been right ever since. starts and idles fine and seems to drive normal, then once it warms up the problem starts... around 2300-2500rpm the engine starts surging badly, and continues until the rpm drops back down. when you stop and put it in park, and revv the engine, it sounds exactly like the engine is being cut on and off rapidly, like a revv limiter, but starting at 2300-2500rpm ... anybody have any ideas ? this one has me totally stumped... changed the fuel filter first....................

Re: 1992 explorer

i had a 1995 dodge stratus do the same thing i changed the crank sensor and the Throttle Positioning sensor and cleared it up...you also might wanna turn the key on and see if you here the fuel pump. for that amount of miles the fuel pump can be worn out. Good luck

the fuel pump does come on, you can clearly hear it when you twist the key... but its the original pump, so i'm guessing there's a good chance its pretty weak.

In tank fuel pumps are known to fail if run out of fuel. The damage
to the turbine within the pump is damaged. Do not buy a pump
at a local parts store. Buy oem pump only. You will thank me later.
Good Luck
