speed sensor- abs or vehicle?

i have a 95 k1500 and the speed sensor is out. the speedo still works but the after doing the diagnostics, it showed that the sensor was bad. i have looked on sever sites for this part and quite a few local shops. when i isay i need a vss they show me one with a braccket on it. mine screws right into the transfer case. i finally found some online that call it a vss where other places they call it an abs speed sensor. one web site had both types with a big difference in cost. they were different manufacturers and i can see a few bucks, but one was a 1/3 more expensive. can anybody tell me if this is the same sensor? i have looked everywhere on my transmission, hoping to find another sensor that uses a bracket to munt it but can not find one. the wires going to the sensor are purple ans gray & green and black.

Re: speed sensor- abs or vehicle?

There is only one speed sensor but it really depends on which tranny you have. Do you see this on your tranny? http://shbox.com/1/vss.jpg

If so you have the 4L60E and the speed sensor is 8673299 (GM Part Number).

The 4L80E uses 24203876.

my speed sensor has to be removed by a 1" wrench. it screws straight into the transfer case. i have the 4 wheel abs and i have drum brakes in the rear.

Re: speed sensor- abs or vehicle?

fasteddie70,
My appologies. The correct part number for speed sensor for a 4x4 is 15546837.

i just spoke with a local transmission shop. they said that if my vss was bad, the speedo would not work. mine works fine. does this mean that my vss is good or is the tranmission shop trying to make a buck?

Re: speed sensor- abs or vehicle?

In your first post you said "after doing the diagnostics, it showed that the sensor was bad". Perhaps you should define how they determined that the sensor is bad. However, if your speedo is working, then the sensor is fine.

GM Part# 15547452 (also AC Delco # 213-204) was used on many trucks and vans.

Do you have a Check Engine Light or ABS Light on? If not, I would not replace the sensor.

i checked the sensor by lifting one back wheel putting the truck in neutral and spinng the back tire with my foot while stretching forward to hold a voltmeter on the sensor. read no votage (had it set on AC). i then checked for resistance. it showed none. now my ohmmeter only goes to 200 ohms, and i know that it should read around 1500-3000. but it never read anything. all this and my speedometer still works.

When you spun the tire, did the drive shaft move? Since the sensor is in the transfer case, the drive shaft has to spin for the sensor to work.

I was wondering if anybody could help me with my Vss dilema. I am about at wits end.
About a week and a half ago my 2000 Blazer started acting up. First the speedometer and the tackometer would start going crazy jumping all around. Then after driving a couple more blocks the ABS light would come on. Shortly there after it would appear that the tranny was messed up and you could only get it to run proper in 1st or 2nd. I posted a message in a chevy newsgroup and I was steered in the direction of the VSS. The symptoms are like a perfect match. I did replace the VSS and also the park/neutral switch. That was another twist. It appears that the transfer case or the tail section at one time had been replaced with a 98. The VSS for my truck didn't work and they had to match it up at autozone. Also the park\neutral switch had been broken and instead of replacing it they had super glued it. I know this message is long, but I wanted to give all the variables. If anybody can help me I would sooo appreciate it.

Thanks
