I have a 305 and im not sure of the Horsepower that it came with ( I took off the ac and smog pumps)(and the 305 came out of an 84 monte carlo)so maybe somebody could help me with lettin me know how much HP that is. Re: MSD ignition: How good is it ?

I just bought all MSD stuff. I havent installed the box yet so I cant tell you if thats worth the money.

The coil seems to make a noticable difference. It runs alot smoother when I first start it up. I also got a set of wires, cap and rotor from msd.

All I know is that a lot of v6 guys upgrade to it. Me, I'm fine with stock..

Re: MSD ignition: How good is it ?

well i dont know if you would notice an improvment on a stock or basic bolt on car but if your buildin a engine w/ some serious compression i could see how it would help to to the fatter spark it produces which would make it alot easier to get a full burn on a high comp. engine. also alot might like the fact that you can play w/ the rev limiter according to what your power band is w/ the engine.

Re: MSD ignition: How good is it ?

an ignition system is not something you install for a hp improovment, you might get like 5-10hp with a full aftermarket system.

the advantages of the aftermarket ignition are improoved starting, better combustion, lower emissions, higher gas mileage, smoother running, faster throttle responce, and better overall driveability especially at higher rpms. I plan on installing a Crane Cams Hi-6 with a PX92 coil on my IROC. look into it, personally i think its better than MSD. But im by no means an expert.

MSD is very good but don't think it's going to give you 20 extra horse power. They just give you better spark at high rpm's and better combustion. There are cheaper msd systems that will work better on a stock motor, the $300 system is for high output motors and have things on it that you will never have to use on a stock motor. If I were u I would just get a MSD 6 or 5, aor at the most a 6AL.
