Yellow all,
Just picked my car (94 GP ) up from the garage where I had the rear trailing arm replaced. (cracked in half). While they had it up on the rack, they found a couple other problems. Their sevice order read : Found that the right front (i assume passenger side) lower ball joint was loose and the left outer tie rod was loose. Needs a couple of front tires and a alignment. Is this something a DIY could do in my driveway? Just got this car a couple of months ago. I don't think a ball joint and tie rod would be that expensive to buy. I changed a lower ball joint on a 91 ford thundbird (with the tool clamp rental from the zone) a year ago and it didn't seem that bad. The garage wants $500 to do this. Is there any issues that I should be aware of or should I start saving up some money? Thank you for any advice! |

Re: 94 grand prix needs some work. How hard?
the ball joint and the tie rod will not be that hard.a couple hours maybe. you will have to take it in for a alignment though.

Re: 94 grand prix needs some work. How hard?
the ball joint and tie rod are easily do-able, but the alignment needs to be done at a shop. your car requires a 4-wheel alignment, so be sure teh shop you take it to is capable of doing a 4-wheel alignment

I was hoping you guys would say that. I will tackle it then. I have another question. Autozone has a duralast balljoint for $30 (lifetime
warrenty ) and a valuecraft balljoint for $15 . ( 3 month warrenty ). Is it true that these are basically the same part as for as quality goes and what your paying for is the longer warrenty? I probably will keep this car only a couple of years, don't want to spend anymore than I have to. Thanks again for the advice ! |

spend the extra money for the lifetime warranty ball joint, instead of going the cheap way out.

Yes, I did get the lifetime warrenty parts. It wasn't to bad to change. My next project is changing the oil pump drive o-ring. The exchanging of information and advice in this forum is invaluable! Can you image the money us forum members have saved by doing alot of the work ourselves as opposed to being held hostage by the service shops? Unbelievable! Thanks again!!

Re: 94 grand prix needs some work. How hard?
when you change that oil pump drive o-ring, (fel-pro part number 70800, do yourself a favor and put a 70184 distributor gasket between it and the top of the block as added insurance against future leaks. Slide the gasket on first, then put the new o-ring in place, and you won't have to worry about it leaking again. Not to knock the chain stores, but never buy their "white box" cheapo lines, as they are of questionable quality at best, and no one wants to do a job twice.

Re: 94 grand prix needs some work. How hard?
yes, the 70184 is a fel pro number. It actually is for a small block Chevy, but it fits the oil pump drive on our cars perfectly. Should run you less than $2 at any auto parts store.
