Unhappy 1st Gen Accord runs hot

I recently bought a 1981 accord with A/T with only 50k miles on it. I love it! But it seems to have a problem with overheating at freeway speeds. Forget driving over 60 or using the A/C if you are going over 50. I live in Southern California and driving under 70 in clear traffic is dangerous!

My last one was a 5 spped, so I am not familiar with this problem. Anyone have any ideas? Was this just a problem with the early models not being designed to drive fast? Or is there mechanical issue going on? If it is a design limitation, is it possible to install an aftermarket overdrive?

Re: 1st Gen Accord runs hot

check your thermostat. If there is a problem with it, you will be able to check by putting the thermostat in water and start to boil it. If it opens, then that's not the problem, but if it does nothing during the time that your heating up to boiling temperature, then it's your thermostat.
