Question 2.8l cruising speed question

I have a 85 cherokee chief with a 2.8l v6, four door four wheel drive. When cruising at highway speed(65-70mph) I usually run at around 3500 - 4000 rpm. Is this normal? It seems like it shouldn't be running that high at that speed. The tranny shifts fine and every thing so it doen't seem to be the problem, can anyone tell me if this is normal or not?

Re: 2.8l cruising speed question

It does seem high for RPM. would think that 2500 max at highway speeds is reasonable.

What axle gears are you running??

What transmission???

What is the rolling radius of your tires?? (distance from the road to the center of the axle to the nearest 1/8")

With that infor we can easily calculate engine rpm at any speed you want.

Re: 2.8l cruising speed question

It sounds like you have an auto or the 4 spd manual trans (no OD), and 3.73 gears.

At 60 mph, my '84 with a 2.8 spins at 3000 rpm. It has 3.73 axle gears.
IMHO this is a bit too high revving for comfortable highway cruising. However, a stock 2.8 is a bit low on power. The shorter gears help acceleration a bit, especially holding cruising speed on the hills and this small v6 doesn't mind revving a bit.
