Tire Pressure

I just bought an 2005, 2500 HD, ext cab. The tire size is 245/75R 16. The recommended pressure on the door sticker reads, 55 lbs front and 80 lbs for the rear. What tire pressures do those who have similiar trucks run?

Thanks,

Joe

Re: Tire Pressure

Best bet is to run the pressure that the door sticker says to unless you have different tires than what comes from factory, then run the pressure the tire mfg says to.

If you rember Firestone and Ford had an arguement about this very same thing about 5 years ago. If it were me i would run the pressure that the tire mfg. has stamped in the tire.

I don't have your size tires - but I'm just a bit amazed at the high tire pressures you're talking about. They may be correct - but they seem very very high. I have 20 inch tires and my recommended inflation is 30 lbs front and 30 lbs rear.

Re: Tire Pressure

I remember most of the 3/4 ton trucks on the farm from early 70's up always had 60+ psi for load capacity. You don't want to put a load in that thing and feel a soft sidewall roll when going around a corner and then loose it...... Not a good feeling watching the back end come around your front end....

"If it were me i would run the pressure that the tire mfg. has stamped in the tire."

What's stamped on the sidewall of the tire is the maximum - not a recommendation. (even says so!)

If you're using the same size as came on the truck, regardless of who made the tire, use the pressure on the placard (the vehicle manufacturer's spec,)

BTW, Walleye's tire size is LT245/75R16. The letters are extremely important (so are the absence of letters - that means a European sizing system, and it's every so slightly different)

Hope this helps.

Joe, my '02 HD also calls for 55 front 80 rear. I run 55 all the way around in the 265's that are on it now. The HD series does not need help in the rough ride department. If 55 is enough for the front tires with the engine weight over them, 55 is more than enough for the rear when holding up an empty box. If I'm hauling something heavy, then I add air to the rear but for daily driving I appreciate the extra cush.

That sounds like a good idea

"That sounds like a good idea"

Just don't EVER forget. An overloaded tire failure is not a pretty sight. And a tire never forgets, so it might fail long after the incident.
