Ranger Transmision

Hello, the hubby just put in a new engine. That worked great, but when he went up the street, the trans started shifting funny. He came back and it turns out he put in the wrong trans fluid - put in dextron III/mercon instead of mercon V. So he drained the fluid and put in mercon v (overfilling it by a qt)-the trans is still rough and the O/D light flickers on when he got to 40 mph. My question is could the wrong fluid cause a problem so quickly, or the overfilling? He also thinks maybe it's the wire harness -any help is appreciated-thank you

over filling is worse than being short for automatics. a sign that this is a problem would be foamy ATF on the dipstick. Check dipstick after the vehichle is warmed up in park on a level surface while it is running to see if it is over-full.

Thanks, he took out some fluid, now he doesnt know whether to get a rebuild kit, or spend $ on getting the car flushed so all of the wrong fluid is out (he's drained it twice already) or what. It has the most problems when it gets to around 50 mph. He was told it could have been the wrong ATF that would mess it up so quickly. We're not sure what to do since money is a problem.

I know that it isn't cheap, but try scraping up the money to get a oil/filter change, done at a transmission shop.

It might not help it shift better but it's the only thing that might help

Thanks- They charge 100 bucks here so he drained it a few times, now he's checking the wiring harness that came w/the engine he put in, there was alot of water in it. (it was in the rain before it was put in car)

Ford Tech Here! IF DRAINING THE WATER OUT OF THE HARNESS DOESN'T FIX IT Take The Trans And Get It Flush That Should Fix It. You Could Change The Fluid All Day Long And It Wont Fix It The Torque Convertor And Other Componets Still Have The Fluid In Them. Try The Flush That Should Fix It
