Need new back Breaks

I noticed a wile back that my emergency break light was coming on randomly when I would hit the breaks and let the peddle out quickly. So I checked my break fluid and it was fine. I dont have a manual for my 94 T bird so guess I just ignored the light. Now this past week the light is on almost more than it is off. If I push the peddle in a little when the light is on and release it really slowly the light will go off for a little wile.(Untill I push the break back in or go fast around a sharp corner.) Now I noticed that my back breaks are making a high pitched noise if I hit them somewhat hard. Oh by the way my front breaks are 4 months old and the back breaks are drum breaks. So i'm guessing i need new pads for the back, but I dont really know what i need. I believe the back pads were replaced in 1999. So my question is what do i need for break parts? Thanks again.

Re: Need new back Breaks

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but you do need new brake shoes for the back. Be sure to readjust the tension in the back (providing your brakes need it, some tension themselves). If that doesn't work for the light problem, try bleeding and refilling your brakes.

Re: Need new back Breaks

If the squeal you hear is from worn BRAKE shoes grinding on the drums, then you will probably need new drums also. I suggest replacing the wheel cylinders at this time, also. The brake shoes should always be adjusted out until you hear them lightly rubbing the drum when you spin the wheel before you rely on the self adjusting mechanism for final adjustment. Otherwise you may find your brake pedal going to the floor the first time you hit the brakes!
