Electrical problem?
I know, I know, I should search - the problem is that I don't even know what to search for.
Anyways, we have a 97 Grand Voyager (3.3 Liter Ralley Edition with 130,xxx miles) and today it decided to just "stop running" while en route. My wife was driving, and she says it just turned off........all the dash lights went on, but the engine turned off - all the accessories still work (i.e. radio, dash lights, fan, etc.) but nothing from under the hood. She was able to pull over (without the power steering ), and now when I try to turn it over .......nothing. Again, the accessories work, but nothing from under the hood. You can hear a few relays trying to work, but no click or anything trying to turn it over/crank. Given the suddenness of this, and the fact that the accessories still work, I am guessing it has something to do with the computer or main electrical (but then again, I am a self proclaimed noob, so I could be way off). Anyone with any insights, or care to at lease point me in the right direction? Thanks a lot! |

Re: Electrical problem?
if it was my car, and I was stranded with no electrical meters or diagnostic equipment, I would smack the starter with something (a hammer would be ideal) and see what happen. Sometimes jarring it will get it to spin

I am relatively certain it is not the starter - I replaced that about nine months ago. I am going to start by pulling the battery and alternator to see if one/both of those are bad.......both are pretty old.

Automatic shutdown relay? or a fuse or fusible link. For it to shut down while driving tells me it's not the starter. Battery and alternator are a good start. I would think though if it was a battery or alternator, you would see a gradual deteriortion in performance. But it is possible One or both caused a short, blowing a fuse or 2 and instantly shutting it down. Get the haynes manual out and start checking. Give the fuses and links a good going over. Don't forget to check the grounds esp for the battery.

As far as a deterioration in performance........that is a tough one because my wife usually drives it and she isn't as "in tune" with what is/should be happening as I might be. I looked at the fuses and everything looked ok........I will check again - as well as start thumbing through a manual. Thanks again.........I will let you know what happens (or ask more "dumb" questions......haha). |

With the car shutting off like that it could be a bad ground or computer , but most likely it was the cam sensor that went. If that happens the car basically just shuts off and when you try to start it nothing happens just cliclking relays and sometime the gauges will spike all over

Re: Electrical problem?
Yes, I'd check the camshaft and crankshaft sensors. Could possibly be the fuel pump, pump relay etc. Do you hear the fuel pump spin up for a second or two when you trun the key on?

Re: Electrical problem?
UPDATE -
To make a long story short, it turned out to be a bad alternator. I took both the battery and alternator out to be tested, and the alternator was the culprit........put a new one on (and a new belt), and it appears that things are back to normal. Thanks for the help/suggestions, guys! |
