1996 626 alternator belt

A friend has a 96 626 4cyl with 75000 miles.
He called me to say the car won't start.
I go look at it and find the alternator belt shredded.
My question is - has any damage been done to the motor?
I can't tell what else is driven off that belt.
The second belt is still in place and in good condition.
Can I throw a new belt on and away he goes?

Got the new belt on and the car will not start.
As you turn the key to start it, it turns over and backfires.
Any suggestions?
