Screeching/ Whistling noise

Hey guys need some help figuring out a recent annoying noice. My escort (manual/98) JUST started making a screeching noise. It is not from the breaks. It happens when the car is moving. Even when it was in neutral and it was moving foward I can slightly hear it. It is like a screeching noise a bit like the breaks with a blend of friction. If that makes any sense. Also I hear a whistling noise. Any ideas on what it may be?

Have you checked the transmission fluid level?

Thank You!

Problem solved. I was low on fluid. I replaced it.. after about 10 minutes of driving the noise stopped.

Thanks a billion!

I had the same noise on my '95 Esort manual tran.,and the transmission lube was empty also. That speedometer cable was nasty getting out! I put in some stop leak and it seems okay.
