battery keeps dying. Help!
The battery keeps dying in my 1971 Chevelle. The battery is new and tests good, the alternator is new, tests good, and charges. The negative cable is grounded solidly, and the positive cable is solid on the starter. All of the connections are tight on the alternator. However, if the car sits for more than about a week and a half, the battery is completely dead. The car won't even try to start. Any ideas on why this keeps happening?

Re: battery keeps dying. Help!
no ideas on why your battery is dying, but i would suggest taking your car to a local automotive store. my local store is autozone and if somebody brings their car in they will usually run tests on it and tell you what the problem is for free. I hope you get the problem fixed soon.

If the battery and alternator both test good then you either have a short or current draw when the key is off.
For a quick test disconnect the grnd cable and hook up a test light between the cable end and the battery. If there is a draw the light will be on. From there remove fuses one at a time and see if the light goes out. If it does .. great then you found the short easily ... if it doesnt ... it aint gonna be so easy and will take more than I feel like typing. |

Re: battery keeps dying. Help!
Thanks... I think I actually found the problem by accident this morning. I was putting something in the glove box and as I was shutting it, I noticed that the light didn't appear to go off. Turns out that the thing doesn't shut completely unless you force it, and so the light does indeed stay on. Not a lot of draw, but sitting for a week and a half should be enough to kill a battery. I fixed that problem so here's hoping...
