Question 2002 4runner transmission problem ?

I have a 2002 Toyota 4 Runner SR5 automatic ... it has about 87,000 miles on it. About 4 months ago when I would start the SUV, it would sporadically hesitate to go into 2nd gear and would rev up the RPMs. I could just continue to drive and eventually the truck would go into gear.

Now, everytime I start my SUV (especially in humid, cooler temperatures) the transmission doesn't want to get out of 1st gear. The RPMs rev up and I can't do anything, except stop and restart the engine, and hope it jumps into gear.

I took it to an guy who hooked up the truck to a electronic device to see if there was anything wrong with the electric components of the truck - he said it came back clear. He took the bottom off of the transmission and cleaned out a bunch of metal shavings he said was in the there... but unfortunately he's not a transmission guy and couldn't provide me detail on what it might be.

In summary: the transmission doesn't want to pop into gear past 20-30 mph and the RPM revs up. Right now, there's quick fix (stopping & restarting engine)... but I'm scared that soon that time will takes it's toll.

I've been told to replace the transmission - yikes! Before I do this, I just really need some feedback.
