Question 1990 Olds 88 Stalling at idle/driving

I have a 1990 Olds 88 that is stalling at idle and sometimes while driving.
I have replaced: air filter, fuel filter, pcv valve, spark plugs, spark plug wires.
The alternator checks out ok, No check engine light, no codes coming from
diagnostic terminal. From searching this forum, the following items have been
discussed

Idle air controller
Crankshaft Sensor
Camshaft Sensor
Mass Airflow Sensor
EGR
Fuel Pump

Is there any way that I can test these items without replacing?

You can try checking the fuel pressuer with a gauge. There will be instructions with the gauge on how to test the pressure. The egr valve can be physically inspected and also inspected with a vacuum gauge. The MAF sensor is a little trickier. However before you decide to replace it, you might wan't to change the relay first.

Re: 1990 Olds 88 Stalling at idle/driving

also, check your fuel filter, that could be causing ur engine to stall, simply go gas, and maybe check.replace your ingition coils and module, mine wouldnt start after it got hot, it would stay on but once u turn it off, you would have to let it cool down to start up, turned out to be some sensor on the module, like on the bottom of it. but i replaced the module and coils anyways, and all seems good. and once a similar thing happened to a friends car, and he took a battery wire he got from walmart, and took it from the negitive battery terminal and hooked it up to his engine i believe, he said it was a bad ground problem and it kept shutting down. im not sure on the details though

Thanks for the reply.....I took some gas out of the tank and found some water in it, hopefully this is the answer to my problems. I took the car to a local shop to get the tank drained while I was out of town and they also said the computer needed to be replaced also. I'm going to get the water out of my tank first before I have the computer replaced...Anyone know how much if is to replace the computer...and if I can do it myself

Thanks

Re: 1990 Olds 88 Stalling at idle/driving

hmm water would be causing it to stall. to prevent water from getting in there in the future dont let the gas level get below a quarter of the tank in cold weather, when that happens you get condensation and the water that appears then goes under the gas, because the gas is less dense, therefore water gets pumped into the system and the engine cant burn water. you probably already knew that anyways. and at autozone your looking at about $80.00 for a computer, and its located on the passanger side behind the dash, usually above the kick plate. you should be able to replace it easily, but i dont know if theres any programming involved in the computer. and there is the core value of $95.00. so the total price is $175. but you get 95 back when u give them your old computer. but i think maybe once you get the water it it could be fixed. my 88 hasnt had the computer changed ever, runs great. I hope you get your problem fixed and get back to driving your 88 soon.

The computer is an easy replacement. However, I would check it first to make sure it's bad. I've had to replace the ECM on my 89 a couple times, but it was easy to tell it was bad because it wouldn't even read the code 12. You need to make sure the service numbers are the same on the replacement computer thats on the original computer. You'll most likely have to special order the computer as I have found they don't stock them normally. it should run about $100 give or take. Remember to swap the proms from the old to the new computer.

Re: 1990 Olds 88 Stalling at idle/driving

wait so if the computer shows a CODE 12 in diagnostics then its good, because the one in my olds shows a code 12, and a code 23 which is the manifold air temp sensor
