Question Will this stereo work?

I have a 1999 Silverado NBS, with the factory radio. I'm trying to rig up an in-dash XM setup, and I'm shopping for "class II" radios with the band button. It looks like GM part number 15104155 will fit, but will the wiring harness and such be compatible? Even better, is there a place out on the Internet to look this sort of thing up? A Google search didn't tell me much.

My current stereo has a tape deck with a remote CD player, but the one I'm looking at has a CD in the unit, so I'm not concerned with the remote player being functional. My truck has nothing else that apparently goes through the radio, like OnStar, navigation, etc.

Thanks for the help...

the radio plug from 99-02 should be the same but if it is a 03-05 style radio it will be a different size and a different plug. if the radio has the squeeze clips on the sides then it will work.

Re: Will this stereo work?

do they make a harness adapter to put a 03-05 radio in a 99-02?

Re: Will this stereo work?

there are major issues with the complexity of the newer radios.... They apparently have different vehicle functions programmed in to them, such as on star, door chimes, and something to do with the airbag setup (what a bunch of ass monkies). Anyway, It is my impression that the newer radios will not function in older model trucks. It is difficult to even replace the new radios in the trucks with an aftermarket radio, because of the above mentioned dillemas (sp?). Other people here are better quailfied to answer this question than me, so I would wait to hear from them.

Re: Will this stereo work?

Can a '03-05 instrument bezel (the trim piece that pulls off to get to everything) be mounted in a 99-02 so you can use a double DIN head unit?

most of the radio could be wired to work but you would have to find a harness from a junkyard or dealer and then cut the dash trim or get a newer one for a 03-05 but them the climate control is also a different size. and the 03-05 trucks radio can be replaced easily as long as the radio does not say BOSE or RDS i beleive that means "radio data system" and the radio functions as part of the car.

Re: Will this stereo work?

Man, the reason I ask is that you can get some pretty awesome double DIN head units

Re: Will this stereo work?

Nineball: Where did you hear that the airbag setup (or part of it) was built into the factory radio? They have adapters to deal with the other functions (chimes, etc.) but I've never heard of airbags being tied to the radio. I would like to replace my factory HU, but I definitely don't want to screw with the airbags. Does anyone have any concrete information on this subject?

Re: Will this stereo work?

I'd think a reputable car stereo shop would be able to tell you.

There are a few threads in this forum that deal with the 03-05 radio nuances... If you do a search for them they should answer all of your questions... I may have been combining a couple of threads together by accident.
