1988 olds delta 88 cam sensor

Checked the codes and it is showing Cam sensor/faulty. Can you tell me what the cam sensor is? Is it something that can be replaced by someone who doesn't know much about cars?

I assume you are getting a code 41? The code is for the Cam sensor CIRCUIT, so you have to check the cam sensor, interruptor magnet, and any plugs/wires in between.

Yes, the sensor is not difficult to replace. It should be around 25 bucks at any parts store. To replace, you will need to remove your front passenger side tire, remove the 3 plastic tabs holding the plastic splash guard in, then you'll have to feel around for the sensor itself. It is kinda triangular shaped with an electical plug on it. You can spot it after you get a new one to use as a visual reference.

Your other possibility is the interruptor magnet.... it is clipped into the camshaft sprocket (I beleive). In any case, you can turn your crankshaft to show the magnet when you take the cam sensor off. Just spin the harmonic balancer (should be the lowest pulley on your engine, just loosen your belt by disengaging your tensioner (small pulley by your alternator w/ the exposed bolt). The magnet is about the same diameter as a dime and is in a black plastic housing.... if gone or broken, then you're looking at shop labor.... it's an 10 dollar part that takes 2 to 5 hours to replace, depending on how badly your bolts are grimed onto your engine.

HTH, although long.....but i have two olds w/ the same code 41 problem 'cept both need new magnets....

BTW, have your mechanic epoxy the damn magnet in when/if it is replaced to avoid haveing it popped out again....
