Selected gear signal

Hi everyone.

I'm thinking of adding a selected gear indicator to my car, and the biggest stumbling block for me is getting the signal of which gear is selected. I'd really appreciate some ideas.

My first thought was to use magnet switches near the shifter (manual gearbox, btw), but I think there might be some problems with that. First off, the switches would need to be rather close to each other and there could be some interference. And secondly, the lever vibrates quite noticeably, which would cause the switches to break the circuit or, again, there could be interference. Same problem would be encountered with light activated switches.

Any ideas? I'd prefer it to be a non-contact system. Hope my explanation was reasonably clear.
