Rear Brake Calipers, Why do they Suck? Still!!

I Understand That there was a design flaw back in 1987 for the 1988 New W-body cars with the rear calipers. they figured that out in 1989 why 15-16 years later I am still dealing with this crap? I just today replaced my brother in laws brakes on his 95 Grand prix Rear caliper pass side locked up, yet another rear caliper to be replaced in my drive way i have a 88 regal and have replaced both sides numerous times in seven years never once had to touch either of the front calipers short of the pads/rotors. last time the drivers side rear caught fire! melting the brake hose burning the tire and the hubcap and destroying pads rotor and caliper (needless to say that was an expensive weekend) since then no problems i have heard that the brake hose can cause those problems in some cases

Any insight into why the calipers still are no better please let me know p.s. Every time i have greased the slide pins so that can't be the reason!

Thumbs down Re: Rear Brake Calipers, Why do they Suck? Still!!

You have a mechanical lever-cam assembly with a spring return for the emergency brake. That lever-cam acts like a ratchet and is used to adjust your caliper and pads to the rotor. The lever tends to rust and bind in the caliper housing to the point that the spring can not return it to the home position, therefore you have pressure on your pads all the time. I owned several Camaros and one Regal with the same setup. GM recommended using the emergency brake every time you park the car to keep them free. I went one set further, and keep mine lubricated with WD40 about every three months and they worked fine after that. Spray around where the lever and cam assembly are on the back side of the caliper, being careful not to get any on your pads or rotors. If you do spray some on the rotor or pad, use brake cleaner to remove it. I also would work the E-brake back and forth every chance I got, in addition to using it every day when parking. If you have an old caliper, take the cam ratchet assembly out or the caliper housing and you will see what I am talking about. I always wondered why GM designed something that stupid, and continued to install them on new cars through 1995, knowing that they had a problem the first year they were used. (1985)
This is for the GM Engineer that designed these
