Honda Civic 2006 finalized...Article
Jul. 9, 2005. 01:00 AM
This 2006 Civic Si concept, which bowed at the Chicago car show this spring, is said to be almost identical to recent spy shots of Civic prototypes. Below is a demonstration version of Honda’s new 1.3 L engine set for the Hybrid this fall. No fuel consumption figures were released. Civic to get two new engines Powerful but efficient 1.8 L set for new coupe Honda rates 1.3 L four-cylinder at 95 hp in Hybrid When the all-new, Canadian-built Honda Civic coupe and sedan arrive this fall, they will feature new engines as well as new bodywork. Spy shots caught during prototype testing in the U.S. confirm that the production version of the new coupe will look almost identical to the stylish concept car introduced at the Chicago auto show earlier this year. Both models will feature a new 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine designed to simultaneously improve performance and fuel economy. It incorporates both variable-intake-tuning and an "intelligent" i-VTEC system that automatically adjusts valve timing for maximum efficiency during start-up and acceleration, thus optimizing torque output in those conditions. The engine then delays intake-valve closing during cruising and other low-load operation to minimize pumping losses and enhance fuel economy. Honda says the car accelerates with the performance of a 2.0-litre engine, but provides fuel economy similar to a 1.5-litre — and 6 per cent better than the current 1.7-litre Civic. VTEC stands for variable valve timing and lift electronic control. With peak outputs of 140 hp and 128 lb.-ft. of torque, the new four will be among the most powerful standard engines in the compact class. A high-performance SI coupe is rumoured to feature a 200-hp engine and six-speed manual transmission. The Civic Hybrid, which will be introduced along with the other new models, gets a new powertrain, too. It incorporates a sophisticated 1.3-litre engine, with a three-stage i-VTEC system and a host of features to reduce internal friction. Its i-VTEC set-up is similar to that in the 1.8, but with a third mode that closes all valves and shuts down combustion during deceleration. The result is a 10-per cent reduction in recovered regenerative braking energy for recharging the Hybrid's batteries, Honda claims. The 1.3 engine is rated at 95 hp at 6000 r.p.m. and 88 lb.-ft. of torque at 4500 rpm. It combines with a new electric motor, developed by Honda, that attains an output of 20 hp, one-and-a-half times that of the current model, with no increase in size. The auto maker rates the combined package at 115 hp at 6000 r.p.m. and 135 lb.-ft. at 2500 r.p.m. Battery output has been increased about 30 per cent from the current model. Like the Accord Hybrid, the car uses a hybrid air-conditioning compressor. The Civic Hybrid operates in six different modes, depending on conditions, from engine-off with the vehicle stationary, to full engine power, with high-speed valve-timing mode and electric-motor assist on hard acceleration. Fuel-consumption figures for the new Hybrid have not yet been released. Additional articles by Gerry Malloy |
