cylinder dead?????

i fixed the rest of the problems thanks to you guys!! but it is still running like crap and shuts off if u let go of the throttle. so i let it run for a minute then i touched the header pipes. the 3rd pipe was cold and the other 3 were hott. so i guess it is only running off of 3 cylinders... id that the reason why its running nasty and shuts off if u dont stay on the idle? any ideas wat is wrong with that 3rd cylinder?

Re: cylinder dead?????

cheak for spark on that cylinder if its sparking cheak the plug to see if its filed maybe that carb is clogged your bike should have a carb for each cylinder drop some of that carb cleaner additive into your gas tank and run it for a while choke it hard so it idles maybe itll come out of it

Re: Re: cylinder dead?????

id cheak for spark its obviously getting gas so it almost has to have something to do with fireing and new spark plugs doesnt mean 1 isnt bad or that it isnt filed cheak the plug see if its filed while your seeing if theres spark from the spark plug wire just watch inside the wire and see if its arcing acrossed

Re: cylinder dead?????

Three things necessary: Air, Fuel, Spark!
AIR
Your (3) other cyclinders work, so your airbox is free of debris and air is flowing. Make sure you have a free path through the airbox into all carburetors.
Fuel
Your carburetor has a little "cap" on it that keeps the carb pulling vacuum. You can find it on the other cylinders. Sometimes they dry rot and fall off, or someone accidentally pops one off and forgets about it. This will cause the carb to lose vacuum and not pull sufficient fuel.
Spark
Your bike has (2) "coil packs" that each feed spark (2) wires to the cylinders. The engine heat cycle, weather, blown fuses, etc. may cause your coil to take a dive. Coils are interchangeable side to side. Take the left coil pack and swap it for the right pack. Run the bike (1) minute as before and see if a different cylinder is cool.
You can use a digital multi-meter to test the coils as per the manual, but swapping them is down and dirty no reading style.

Re: cylinder dead?????

this guy knows his shit

but if you switch the plugs around what about the timing ... wouldnt the spark be off.. if it works like cars then that wouldnt work... not for sure but just a thought

maybe just switch the coil packs all together

how long has it been since the valves have been adjusted?.. my friend's bike used to run awesome and now its running horrible.. valve's getting too off... it could be that.. or a valve stuck or something something making it not fire properly.. i know around here to get the valve's adjusted and engine gone through its only like 250$.. not bad...

good luck

Yea I would check that particular cylinders spark plug and see if its sparking right. Just pull the particular spark plug out with the plug still attached, ground it against the frame and see if its sparking straight up. If its not, then you know its bad. Youll probably want to disconnect the fuel line to the carbs and turn it over until all the gas is burnt, then try it.
