Question Question about emissions

Ok,

I failed an emissions test with my 1988 Grand Prix. It failed in regards with releasing too much NOX gasses. Would you just go ahead and replace the EGR valve? Is that the probable cause/solution?

Also, I smell gas everytime I get close to my vehicle. I am assuming that the evaporative canister is bad on it, but I havent taken a look at it yet. Could this be a contributer in my emissions failure as well?

Thanks.

Re: Question about emissions

The egr is the way to go. If it is original it is probably in need of replacement anyway. Make sure you clean the EGR passages as well since they can become clogged with carbon and prevent the EGR from working properly.
