Best lacquer clearcoat?

This PPG acrylic lacquer is driving me nuts. Once, it dried, there were some flaky spots that are a bitch to get out. Can anyone reccomend me a good brand of lacquer clear?

Re: Best lacquer clearcoat?

I don't believe lacquer clear is available. Government regulation phazed out lacquer paints, suprised you found lacquer. Lacquer primers are still available, and spray cans of lacquer you can get, but didn't realize ppg still sold lacquer paint. Lacquer isn't very durable or chemical resistant and needs to be buffed to bring out gloss. Did you try buffing it all? I believe you can spray enamel or urethane clear over lacquer, but not the other way around if I am remembering it correctly. Very few people use lacquer products anymore.

It buffs out just fine, but the flaky parts are annoying. I have PPG black lacquer and some Ferrari and Lamborghini airbrush lacquers. In this case, can you reccomend some good enamel clears?

Re: Best lacquer clearcoat?

I am not sure what you mean about flaky parts. Most clears I've used are decent. For a cheaper clear Western finishers select is pretty good. I am not really fond of sherwin williams products, but that clear was supplied for a hood I painted and was surprised at how nicely it layed out. Omni and nason clears will probably be in the same price range. Then you got the expensive top of the line clears. PPG has 2002 polyurethane clear and 2021 concept urethane clear. Some people like duponts chroma clears but I haven't used them for a very long time. Just double check it will be okay to paint over lacquer. Might even say in the tech sheets for the clear what it is okay to paint it over. I think you can, I believe some basecoats were lacquer based when they came out.

Re: Best lacquer clearcoat?

Urethane products over anything laquer base is just asking for problems.
