air vent probs

Hey, just wondering if you guys could give me some suggestions about what could be wrong here.

For some reason I can not select the normal vents for air flow (from ac/heater), I can use the upper (defrost) or lower (heater) settings, but when I switch to the main vents, the air continues to come from whatever setting it was last on. I hear a noise, like it is trying to change, but it doesn't.

I took out the radio and stuff from the dash, but I really don't see anything.

Could one of you guys with experience with these parts let me know which part needs to be replaced?

Any suggestions would be helpfull, thanks

(did a search and couldn't find anything, hope I'm not missing a thread)

there's got to be some sort of issue with all those controls because my fan blower settings are all wacky like what you are describing. no idea on what it is though. look at my thread 'fan issues' if you want to see whats going on with mine. its very strange.

Re: air vent probs

The controls are actuated by vaccuum lines.

Yeah that's what a mechanic told me about my 89 240sx, unfortunately they couldn't find where the damn vacuum leak is. So my air is stuck on one position and i can't change it.

Also, i think its affecting my engine, because i can feel my engine surging when i step on the gas but there's no change on the speed of the car. I had a vaccum leak on my bpt before and after i fixed it both problems went away but it came back again after a couple of months. I'm thinking its another vacuum leak. But I couldn't where it is.

Does anybody have a vacuum diagram for an 89 240sx? or does anybody knows how to find vacuum leaks?

Re: air vent probs

If when you accelerate your revs go up, but your spee ddoesn't change, you have a slipping clutch.

Yahoooooooo!!! Finally fixed my air vent problem. I went ahead and replaced all my vacuum lines thinking that was the problem, as suggested on this thread. It took me weeks to do this coz I can only do a little bit at a time and believe me a lot of those lines are a bitch to get to. But it didn't help a bit.
So finally, I ended up taking the dashboard off to get access to the entire air system to trace any vacuum lines connected to the air vent system. And behold... there's no damn vacuum line connected to the air vent controls.
The problem was the air vent control motor itself had gone bad that's why it was stuck in one position. As soon as I replaced it, it started working.
It was a waste of time replacing all those vacuum lines. If only I had the right information

Well I did asked if anybody knew how to find vacuum leaks, and not too many sixteen year olds like me would know. I asked local auto stores if they have something to check it out with or if they know how, and nobody seems to know except check all the lines.

If you only had shared us the information before hand instead of blaming me, I wouldn't have to do what I did. So YOU are the half cocked not me. You didn't even give half the information, you gave shitty bullshit info. You were so sure, when you said it was vacuum. APOLOGY ACCEPTED though.

Next time, if you are not sure just say it. This place is suppose to be for sharing information to help other people not to be mocked when a mistake was made. Well its good that its posted now so that other people doesn't have to go through what I have to.

Since it seems like you are all knowing, why don't you grace us with some of your infinite automotive knowledge and let us know how to check for vacuum leaks.

And by the way it's spelled as "VACUUM" not "vacume"

Your another moron, see how fucked up you people are. Giving wrong information just so you can laugh at them. I'm pretty sure you did that intentionally because you didn't know anything about cars. You were trying to make people think you know a lot about cars when in fact you don't know shit.

Also I don't have a problem on my ac its the vents that I have a problem. Read on you moron.

Like SR20 said and I'll say it to you "that's half cocked on your part."
