Hey guys, new to the scene and just bought my first Silvy, love that truck.
She's in the shop right now getting 4.10's front and rear put in (blew up my differential over the weekend, figured why not throw in a 4.10's while they've got her). I've got 106,000 miles on her and was looking at rebuilding the engine though nothing major is wrong, just like the thought of bringing her back to life, when the thought occured to me: is it possible to stroke a 323? If so I wonder how much bigger it could get? I've heard of strokers and wasn't really clear on what was involved other than more cubic inches=more power. Everything I've found so far doesn't even mention stroking a 5.3L so I was wondering if anyone out there has pursued it. Eventually would like to see this bitch stroked, blown, juiced and lifted, but she needs a little work first. Something about being able to leave a four wheel patch on the pavement appeals to me. I know, I'm crazy. Or maybe amongst you guys it's normal? |

If you are going to play that much with the engine get a 6.0L, get an LS1, get an LS2, or wiat for the LS7 427 small block(500 HP & 500 TQ) and blow the doors off anything standing......
Why play when you can torture the feable minded (LS7)

"Stroking" an engine mainly consists of replacing the crankshaft with one that has a longer stroke, thus increasing the CID on the block. Personally, I think it is a good way to go about increasing the CID, as I am not a big fan of boring the cylinders.

4.8/5.3/6.0 all have the same bore. Just order the crankshaft out for a 6.0 and you'll have the bigger engine. I was looking at an Engine Masters' Magazine where they' bored and stroked a Gen III truck engine block to 408 cubic inches, 4.03 bore and 4 inch stroke, some aftermarket LS1 heads, and a FAST intake and some other goodies and it made a shit ton of power, not sure how much but yeah, they spent a lot of money.

Would there be any differences in;
a) main journal size b) are the blocks the same for the 5.3 and 6.0 c) would you have to grind recesses in the block for the added throw of the new crank d) could you you get different rod lengths (5.7"/6.0") Just some things that popped into my head thinking about this.........could be a helluva idea though. |

Get the 495cid 8.1L big block from a 2500HD or 3500.

seems like somewhat of a project, but havin a big block in a 1500 would be sweet. probly cant be a lot harder then actually disassembling ur 5.3 and rebuilding it. but i would check into the aftermarket for the new gen big block first to make sure theres room for "improvement", if u catch my drift. if anybody reads this and has done it, let us know, cuz ive deffinitely thought about that myself.

Pretty mutch boils down to $$$. Stroking the 323 would probably be cheapest leaving enough $$$ left over to play with. I think that bang for the buck a stroker would be ideal. Buying a new truck is out of the question, this one's paid for and to get all the goodies that I have in her plus a 427 would probably run me close to 40g's. Not interested in another car payment, though damnit if that 427 isn't tempting. Hmmmm...
