Tach problems

So I get in my 94 camaro to go to my female's house and when i turn the car on, all the gauges jump to life....except one. My rpm needle was sitting on the bar dead. I turned the car off and checked every fuse regardless of its function. All were ok. I went to my girl's house anyway because i didn't really need; its not like i got a manual. But check this, after I came out there was no problem. A couple of days later it happened again. Then it went back to normal. Am I missing something? a fuse? a sensor? help a man out!

I don't know if it would be any different from a 3rd gen maro, but i had a similar problem. My tach would "over" read the rpms. Like it would be idling at 2500, and by ear, i could tell it was only at about 1000. When i would step on it, 7000 immediately, and that is impossible. What i did was swap the tach out for with another one and it worked fine. wasn't really that hard to do. Found it at a junkyard, and got it for "free". If you can find another maro at the yard with the same readings as yours, just take off and install, unless theres another problem, someone else maybe able to address this soon.

Re: Tach problems

it sounds like a guage cluster malfunction, i dont think swapping the individual component will fix it, it seems like an intermittant electrical problem in the guage cluster. youll probly need to take it to the dealership and have it sent out for repairs.

That weird though 89, the only thing that was messed up on my cluster was the tach, i swapped it out and it ran fine. What was wrong with the other one? Why was it reading so high?

Re: Tach problems

the two problems are different. with your tach it was probly a drive problem, or a spring problem, just the tach being out of adjustment in some way. with his problem it is almost definatly an intermittant electrical problem.
