Tailgate Latch Won't Open

Anyone know how to pop the tailgate latch on a '99 XJ Sport? The release handle isn't working, I need to open the tailgate so I can take the mechanism apart, but right now I can't get it open, any thoughts?

The easiest way is to use a can opener around the latch handle (joke)))))

Its a *itch of a job but the only way I know of is to crawl in the back and take the trim panel off of the lift gate and access it from there.

Its kinda like getting into the trunk of a car by taking the back seat out only worse. BTDTmto

Sorry bout the extra work. Maybe someone has an easier way (from experience)

Nope had the same problem with my '89 cherokee larado the only way I know of is to go through the trim panel.It no fun so go luck!

Not much encouragement for the poor guy are we; but we can cheer him on and ask for pics. Is that fair or what!!!!

Thanks for the info. Sorry no pics, but after peeling back the interior panel I was able to pop the tailgate, fully remove the interior panel and adjust the latch release mechanism. Working perfectly now! Thanks for the help!

Now on to fix a littany of other problems!
