Going faster - Gearing Issue?

I race a 1990 Grand Prix with a 3.1. Its all stripped down and tuned up as best as I can get it. I race at a 3/8 mile short track. The rules are pretty strict and the division requires you keep the car mostly stock. However that is a gray area.

The car handles great in the corners, but it takes forever to get going in the front and back stretch. A friend had told me that the gearing is such that that the power band is found at higher rpms and freeway speeds.

I am keeping the car in second gear all the time. Coming out of the corners and getting from 40mph to about 70mph is taking to much time!!

Any thoughts? Do they make an aftermarket perfromace cam for the 3.1 engine? New computer to alter the torque? Strap a jet engine under the trunk?

Rules

Well you can only run cars with a 2.8 or 3.1 engine. I have made a makeshift "ram air system", installed a chip on the AIT sensor and am running race gas. There are certainly gray areas in the rules, but an engine swap would be too obvious.

Basically I am looking to modify what I have. All I need is a good 20-30 more horses somehow. The suspension and tires I have dialed in good. The corners I am great, the straights I am falling behind.

My Grand Prix is about 400lbs heavier than the Berettas most guys run on the track. I love my car but it’s too sluggish....

Thanx for your idea though. Keep em coming if ya got them.
