New speaker project

Well, since I am driving a single cab silvy, and I'm 6'2", I really didn't have much space to add speakers. I have had a JL 12" that I built a custom box for behind my seat, but so far it has sounded like ass. The seats rattle way too much. My first solution was to buy two 10s
So now, I bought two autotek mx 1044's. They are huge and don't fit in any truck boxes. I would have to make a larger box, that would kill my footroom, and just sound like ass in the seat.

New solution. I have removed my center seat in the truck. Wasn't too hard to take out. I am going to build a custom box in it's place. Any suggestions will be helpful and I will post some pics when I get finished.

Also ordered my K and N intake kit and gibson super truck exhaust.

Re: New speaker project

I would suggest taking your time.... When you start doing these custom projects, its hard to give advice, because it probably hasn't been done exactly how you want...
So, take your time, draw a picture of what you want the end product to look like, where you want the placement of the speaker, amp, cup holders, ect... Take extra time in the fitting of your new console, try to use factory mount points. Use cardboard templates to get an exact fit over the driveshaft molding before you start cutting wood. I think you get the idea...

The more time you spend with the details, the more pleased you will be with the end product.

If you can, try to take pics of the entire process. I would like to see them.

Re: New speaker project

yeah, at this point, im going to do some drawing and template work. i might just add one 10 for now and do a rectangular box. i plan on doing some extensive fiberglass work later, so this will be relatively temporary (1 year or so) but i still want it to look good. i have brackets that I am going to try and bend in place into the stock mounting points, and see what i can do. ill get some pics taken on what i am working on so far tonight. i just got back from lowe's, so i have me a new jigsaw.

that would be great if the money was there. i have the speakers that have been sitting in my room for 8 months, and a 4x4 sheet of mdf sitting in my garage, so this project is going to be free.

i have exhaust and intake on the wayin the mail, so that's the project at hand right now.

i would make the console out of mdf for now and make it where you can just fiberglass onto that later to finish it, unless you want to do a complete fiberglass console. anyways post pics when you are done and good luck

Why don't you face it toward the bed of the pickup, for two reasons:

a) better sound as bass reprodouces off walls

b) better speaker protection

a few reasons: first off, size constraints. making it face upward with that box size and setup was the ideal shape and size for what i am trying to do while keeping it right around 1.5 cubic feet of air. also, most other ways i have mounted it makes the seats rattle, that speaker hits VERY hard, and facing up is the only way i have found to keep those damn seats from vibrating without covering them in dynamat. i also want it removable. I will have more protection when I am finished. I will have the stock armrest console thingy back in that will flip down and sit about 3 inches above the speaker. also, this is primarily temporary until my friend gets his shop going. we are going to do a fiberglass console with the speakers (i'm adding the mate to that one) mounted inside.

Aren't you a little afraid people are going to want to jack it, since it's in plain view? Or did you bolt the box to the floor.

Re: New speaker project

nah, you can't see through my tint unless you look through the windshield, and i live in a very safe neighborhood. once i get the rest of it finished, you won't be able to see the speaker with the armrest down anyway.

Re: New speaker project

Well your off to a start. Make the enclosure more custom. Use some fiberglass to make it more rounded or else router the edges. Take it to an automotive painter and get it to match your truck color. To give you an idea check out my website and tell me what you think of my custom install.
