Please help Iam very girlie and i don't know ANYTHING about cars. My gear shift indicator shows that my car is in reverse and there is ALOT of play in my shifter the car will not start becauce it won't come out of reverse. What could it be and what can I do???

just to let you know, i just had the shift cables replaced in my 1998 2.2 5 speed and it costed $300,
also if it is your shift cable, (im assuming its an automatic) try looking under the hood for a cable connected to your tranny, there should be 2 of them, one of them should lead to the top of your engine (the throttle body), thats your kick down cable, the other cable is the shift cable, its connected to like a switch type thing, that switch is stuck in reverse, and the cable is broken so it cant move it, just pull that switch back and depending on which way you pull it, it will put your transmission in a different gear, try moving it to the park position (you may have to use trial and error with this) and once its in park see if your engine will start
