89 De Ville, hood cable broke, HELP!!

I can't believe that 3 different shops can't open my hood, but they can't. The release cable is broke, at the handle by the floorboard, it may be broke a second place, don't know yet. We have the grill off, have had it on a rack, there is just no way to reach in to even find the cable, we can't even see it. with the hood closed, I don't think we can take the head light out either. Any ideas?? They are now looking for a junk yard hood and about to cut the hood off. Man, I can't believe it, all for leaving my lights on and ran the battery down. The release seemed to work fine till I tried to open it last week, I guess it was just time to go.

Thanks in advance,

Gene

Re: 89 De Ville, hood cable broke, HELP!!

Follow up. Got the hood open. The cable was not broke, except at the handle where I broke it pullin too hard. The plastic piece on the hood end of the cable was broke, not allowing the cable to open the latch. He had to cut a slot in a "rail" below the hood to get a screwdriver up into the latch area to trip it open. They really made it difficult to get to. I had him to just cut the cable to about a foot long, route it through the grill, rather than puttin a new cable in. So glad we didn't have to cut the hood off.

sorry I didn't see this post sooner Gene.
most all GMs from when they first started using that safety latch, up to the mid 90s were pretty much the same location and design:

two screwdrivers, one to pry the hood with just enough pressure to start to crease the metal, and the second driver to slide in and push that clasp to pop it off the latch.

if you do decide to replace the cable, handle and assembly is only about $30. but leaving it hanging in front of the grill, no one will probably find it there either.
