2000 Explorer Tranny Question
I'm looking at buying a 2000 Explorer XLT with the SOHC 4.0 V6 and automatic trans.
During the test drive the tranny shifted very crisply, almost like it had a "shift kit" installed. It did this from 1 to 2 and 2 to 3. Very, hard abrupt shifts with no slippage. About 10 miles into the drive I pulled the tranny dipstick. The fluid was light brown (not red) and when I pulled the dispstick cap from the tube a large puff of smoke came out of the tranny dipstick tube. The dealership says the smoke is not unusual, I think otherwise. Is the tranny in for trouble? |

Re: 2000 Explorer Tranny Question
Find another Explorer. The hard shift is at a minimum a 1-2 shift accumulator seal broken. At worst a clutch pack coming apart. Brown fluid is a no-no.
