Fuel filter location

I have an 86 F150 and the 302 fuel injected motor stalls when I give it gas. It idles alright. I went to change the fuel filter but where it is supposed to be located, there is a fuel pump there. It kind of looks like a 16 oz can with a small foam pad around it and a metal housing holding it to the frame. I also have between that and my tank a black housing that I thought was supposed to be the pump. Did somebody put this pump there instead of a fuel filter??? Please help!!!

The filter should be very close to that pump.

The 16 oz can lookin' with the funny looking connectors thing IS the Fuel Filter, It threw me for a loop on my '87 the first time too. The Black Housing is the fuel pump. If your replacement filter does not look the same, the parts store gave you the wrong one as some models have a smaller filter. Mine had dual tanks, hence the larger filter (I guess).

The fuel filter is a good place to start, but it may not be the answer. A similar issue on my Wife's 302 equipped Marquis ended up being a throttle positioning sensor.

The metal can is actually the high pressure fuel pump. The black container between the pump and the tank contains a paper filter. The bottom (cap) of the black unit will screw off and the filter can be changed. This is on the low pressure side of the fuel pump, so there is no need to relieve the pressure on the system prior to changing the filter. Be careful not to damage or loose the o-ring that is contained in the filter cap.

thanks, I changed it last night. It was completly black.. The truck is still stalling when the gas is applied in drive and reverse. Mostly in reverse. Would a air filter, spark plugs, and wires do the trick???

Check your distributor cap. I had a similar problem where it idle very smooth but when gas was applied it would hesstitae as if it wanted to die. Ended just being that the hold down for the distributor was loose.
