hood scoop ???

i wanna put 1 on b4 i get the car painted. any suggestions on how to? looks like most of them stick on, but i dont want 1 just for looks (really i do) but as long as its on there itll be func so im gonna cut some hole(s) in the hood under it use some fiberglass or something to smooth it in then get the whole car painted. but will the 3m that comes w/ the scoop hold forever?

Re: hood scoop ???

Good question. Ive had many thoughts bout the same thing. Truth is no tape is gonna hold for a long long time. Maybe some sort of small rivet system or even the fiber glass would hold it. If it works post it up. JC Whitney sells hood scoops like on the new Evos and also some like on the WRXs.

if you are going to cut a hole into the hood for the scoop, then i would suggest something like rivets to hold it in place and fiberglass over them soo you cant see them, they'll work together to hold it in place

Screws, bolts, whatever will hold it. You don't want to be in the middle of a race and have your scoop go flying off the car. Of course, I guess you could say it was a mid-race weight reduction.

*slight chuckle, chuckle*
You could probably hold it down with just bout anything...the only reason i would say rivets is b/c if you fiberglass or bondo over them it would be harder to see (no bulky screw head sticking up). Just a thought.

Re: hood scoop ???

oh, in that case maybe u can get a nice set of chrome bolts/screws and just make it seem really mean with the bolts showing. Could look really cool.

and generally i dont like short rams cuz they just take in a whole lotta hot air vs. the small amt of cold air you get w/ stock intakes but...what if i put 1 under or nearly under the scoop? better boost ya think???

Where did that short ram thing come from??? Kinda from left field or something. A short ram intake under a scoop is better than a CAI. CAI's are usually long and take a lot of distance which causes lugging in low RPMs.

Re: hood scoop ???

wish i had posted that. It seems like it would work. It very well could be better than a CAI considering the distance the air has to travel and gets heated on the way through the long tube (sorry, i wasnt trying to steal you thought Jay). Anyone ever done it???

I know a guy who did it to his golf. The main problem was that in the rainy season water wants to come in the scoop so you either have to put a moisture bypass valve or get a removable weather shield. You don't want water in your engine. It is a pain on a daily driver car, but on a race or show car it is great.

Re: hood scoop ???

we really dont have a "rainy season" and the scoop wont be right directly over the filter anyway

Thumbs up

Well do it then. It will make a lot of difference when you are really moving. Plus your engine will cool when you are stopped because heat will come out of the vent. I say do it.
