Rough Shifts

Ive noticed a few times while driving, and especially today sitting in traffic that its really rough and hard shifting into first and sometimes second. Should probably mention im talking about a manual trans. Any reason why it might be so tough? I have to the clutch in as far as i should...just a lil befuddled

Re: Rough Shifts

sounds like something got down in there on the driver side of the shifter, making it hard to get it into alignment, sometimes a peice of trash, or carpeting can do it. other than that it may just be out of adjustment. shouldnt be a hard thing to fix.

Re: Rough Shifts

could still be tranny related. do you have an aftermarket shifter? B&M maybe? if so, might not be installed properly. sometimes people leave the little rubber alignment piece out.

if not aftermarket, how does your clutch feel? does it engage when it is close to the floor, or when it is close to the top (the end of its travel)? if it's close to the floor, this could be it, and this can be adjusted.

Maybe a worn ball.

make sure your hydro clutch is not leaking. I have had them have a slight leak in them and the clutch would not disengauge all the way.

my car is bone stock, and my clutch feels fine. Only thing that bothers me a little is, i usually on here it after taking off from my home parking spot, when i shift into 2nd, i hear a werid noise, but it usually doesnt do it...imma take a look today at it. Im a little confused to what u mean engage. If you mean engage to be able to shift gears, then its to the floor, if u mean engage for like taking off, then its closer to the top

Re: Rough Shifts

that's odd. normally the point where you can shift gears is the same as the point where the car starts moving. but anyway... if you can't shift gears till it's completely to the floor, you should have your clutch adjusted so that you can shift with it 50-75% depressed.

IK, that is something I need to do on mine, like you said it engages when it's almost to the floor... how do you adjust it???

Re: Rough Shifts

don't remember exactly.... had a friend do mine long long time ago (on a Honda). i remember it's relatively easy though. on the cable that attaches to the clutch, there is an adjustment thingy , kinda like the one on the tranny TV cable. don't know where it is on a camaro (I've never had a manual camaro). they all can be adjusted though.

your clutch is hydraulic, it should adjust it's self. However, instant kevin is right, your clutch should disengage before your pedal touches the floor. You might have a leaky slave cylinder or a leaky master cylinder.

Just remember though, just because there is a leak, does not mean that you will see it. Most of the time it is an internal leak between the cylinders.

Re: Rough Shifts

I was having the same problem with my clutch acouple of months ago. It was the slave cylinder. On my car the slave cylinder is inside the bell housing so they have to pull the tranny just to get to it.
Good luck
