CEL and Fuel Gauge

I have a 2001 Rodeo and recently the fuel gauge drops to 0, usually when I stop and the CEL comes on. I have 77K miles. After some time the CEL goes off until the gas gauge again falls to 0. It looks like I need a "fuel send unit." What is it. Is it easy to fix yourself or should I let PEP Boys do it? I am not very handy with this stuff. Thanks

Re: CEL and Fuel Gauge

I wouldnt let pep boys touch my car but thats just me. i woudl find a real good mechanic to do the repair. if its a fuel sender it prolly only requires that you drop the tank and pull it out.

Re: CEL and Fuel Gauge

Same thing happened to me, 2001 Rodeo with 57k miles on it (original owner). Fuel guage starting jumping up and down, on full then empty then on full again, the gas light would begin flashing and then the CEL would come on. Took it to the dealer, they said it was a bad fuel send unit. They wanted to charge me $155 + tax to fix it (100 deductible from my extended 3rd party warranty and 55 for diagnostics). I called Isuzu, they said they treat the fuel send unit and the fuel pump as one unit, this means its covered under the 10 year 120k mile Powertrain warranty. Dealer ended up replacing fuel pump and mass air flow sensor 100% free of charge. Took about a day to service. Very pleased overall with the service and the vehicle.
