Junk Sunfire deck lid

My wife has an '05 Sunfire. The latch for the deck lid won't close. When I got to looking at it, I noticed the lower part of the latch(the loop down by the bumper) is made very cheap and is bending down. That is why it will no longer latch. Also the metal used to make the deck lid is a joke. I was applying pressue to the lid in order to see if the latch would click and the metal collapsed and left a bunch of creases in the lid. I have never seen such thin metal in my life. Now my wife is ready to kill me, because GM will probably not cover the creased deck lid. I am sure they will say it is my fault, even though I applied very light pressure to the lid with my palms. The whole lid and latch assembly is the biggest piece of s##t I have ever seen.
Somebody please offer any advice, or let me know if you have had any similar problems. Thanks,
Kevin
