odometer LCD readout

My 1996 Passat TDI has for many months lost the bottom segment of the odometer readout, including the "miles" indicator ("km" stays visible). I had given this up to fatigue of the LCD unit, although I have no idea whether or not these actually fail as such. Last week, for a day, the display worked perfectly.

There is also a pattern of the trip odometer resetting itself, and the clock too, randomly, but more often during the cold months. This problem is accompantied by a 2 or 3 second "buzz" not quite like a relay chattering, but almost. At the conclusion of this sound, the clock and trip odo. resets. Any ideas? Is this one problem, or two? It is worth the dissection of my dash to fix it? (Memories of tearing out my 1986 Golf Diesel dash still haunt me, and I'm not as patient as is used to be :| ).
