I hear a bureacracy entrenched within it's own desire for self-continuance that it ignores those it was originally developed to assist.

I think of our two parties, which are nearly identical, and how easily they have all of us divided so that we don't notice how many of your rights they're taking away. Realistically, it hasn't changed in over 200 years, but the further they get, the easier it is for them.

Re: What comes to mind when you hear the word politics?

I think of my future career. And I also think of a joke Jay Leno made once -

"Poli- comes from an ancient word meaning 'many' and ticks means blood suckers..."

Or something along those lines. I can't remember it that well.

Politics...

As a government institution- a practice demanding only those who are willing to do anything, no matter what, to get into positions of power -- ironically, these are the LAST people one would want in said positions of power.

Personal level- much like what Yogs said: a practice that most people engage in every day whether they realize it or not -- from choosing teams for a kickball game, to buying a car, to disciplining others.

The latter is unavoidable, as humans are creatures of habit. The former would be easily avoidable -- if the short-sighted, corruptable, ill-administered power structure wasn't already so entrenched.
