Gas gauge or sender?

The problem is the gas gauge on my 92 YJ is ALWAYS on full. The Jeep can be running, shut off, even taking the battery out of the Jeep so there is no power anywhere, the gauge still stays on full. So I am thinking it's the gauge itself and not the sender. Any ideas????

Thanks
Dan

Sounds like the gauge is stuck. A bad sender doesn't work without power. A bad gauge doesn't work without power, but a stuck gauge stays stuck. I would ask if you have tried hitting it, but being a Jeep owner I am sure you have.

Re: Gas gauge or sender?

I had a problem with my 90' YJ, when it wasn't on, gas guage would go down, and it would go on full when the ignition was on. I dropped the gas tank, and wiggled the sending unit, and it was fixed.

But I also have a temp guage that reads incorrectly, and starts at high temp even when off, so it sounds like your gauge is bad just like my temp guage. I don't know what type of gauges you have, but mine are more like a coil and a needle, electromagnetic I think, and have to be replaced.
