84 Od Tranny ??

Just purchased an 84 short/wide with 120K, owner says sometimes tranny will shift hard- but not always, it is an od tranny. I drove the truck without incident & fluid looks/smells ok, Possible time for a filter change? or should I have passed on the truck?, paint is faded but very straight & could easily be made to look cool. Just fishing for info on the tranny- oil changed every 3k miles- well taken car of truck. Any thoughts??

Re: 84 Od Tranny ??

I would try a fluid and filter change, it couldn't hurt. This is a 700r4 by the way. They are a pretty good tranny, but don't pull ANYTHING in OD, you will burn them up, that's their weakness. They are not an extremely durable tranny like the 350 or 400 turbo. Don't get me wrong they are a good all around tranny, just not for severe duty. Honestly I can't say you should have passed on the truck, you didn't say what you paid. If you think you got a good deal that's all that matters. You can always repaint and sell the truck for more. I only have about 700 in the paint on my 88 and that's doing the body work and all myself.
