1996 GMC Jimmy Transmission

I have a big issue with my 1996 Jimmy, In overdrive or drive it will take forever to shift up, and my little light that shows what gear im in keeps going off and on. At first when the light went out then that meant so did my transmission. Anyway if i shift up from first to drive manually if shifts okay but on its on it seems like it isnt getting any power. I changed the fluid and filter an nothing happend... Im pretty sure im going to hae to dump a grand on a new tanny but i just needed some help

How many miles do you have on the truck? Also, the shift indicator has nothing to do with the operation of the tranny. The lights just tell you what gear position you are in. I would check the fluid level on a level surface and when the truck is hot. Shift all through the gears slowly, go from park to reverse to nutral and down through the drive gears. Then check the fluid.
If the fluid is good, it sounds to me like your clutches are worn. Have it checked at a tranny shop. I had mine rebiult last summer for $1400.00. But that was after 187000 miles. Good luck.

Go to autozone and get the codes read for free then come back and post them. There is a good chance that there is nothing wrong with your tranny.

Re: 1996 GMC Jimmy Transmission

It sounds as though it is in limp mode, which is the tranny's natural reaction when certain codes are set.

Here's a list of the different codes and what the tranny does when one is set:

It could be something as simple as a loss of power to the tranny, which could caused by a blown fuse....damaged wire....ignition switch....remote start......
