Timing Issues?

I PUT A TIMING CHAIN IN MY 94 SUBURBAN. DISTRIBUTOR WAS OUT OF SYNC ALSO AND WAS REMOVED AND I REPLACED THE PICKUP AND THE MODULE ALSO AT THIS TIME. HAD PROBLEMS WITH LOOSE CHAIN FOR REPLACEMENTS FINALLY FOUND ONE THAT WAS TIGHT. ANYWAY I PUT IT AT TDC ON #1 CYLINDER WITH THE DOTS POINTING @ EACH OTHER AND ROTOR POINTED TO #1 ,AND DISTRIBUTOR IN THE MIDDLE OF ITS MOVEABLE DISTANCE BUT NEVER GOT A RESPONSE OF ENGINE TRYING TO START TWIST DIST IN BOTH DIRECTION. SO I FIGURED IT TO BE 180 DEG OUT SO I PUT LOWER DOT @ 12 AND THE UPPER AT 12 ALSO GOT IT TO FINALLY START TURNING DISTRIBUTOR COUNTER CLOCKWISE FARTHER THAN WHERE IT WAS SET ORIGINALLY BEFORE IT STOPPED RUNNING. AT LEAST IT RAN,BECAUSE ITS BEEN SITTING SINCE WINTER. IT IS HARD TO START NOW AND IT IS RUNNING VERY ROUGH THOUGH. I PUT IN NEW PLUGS BEFORE I TRIED TO START IT(AC DELCO) IT RAN SMOOTH BEFORE IT STOPPED RUNNING. BIGGEST QUESTION I HAVE NOW IS IF #1 WAS ON EXHAUST AND NOT COMPRESSION STROKE COULD IT MAKE IT RUN LIKE THIS OR WOULD IT NOT RUN AT ALL? I ASSUMED IT WAS STILL THERE BECAUSE I ONLY TURNED THE CRANK ONE REVOLUTION AND POINTED THE ROTOR BACK TO THE #1 CYLINDER ON THE CAP. OH YEH DOEST THE SPARK PLUG FIRE ON A GIVEN CYLINDER ON THE EXHAUST AND THE COMPRESSION STROKE? THANKS FOR LISTENING AND ANY HELP YOU GUYS CAN GIVE ME.

Re: Timing Issues?

Sounds like what mine did, kinda..

I replaced the intake manifod/valve cover gaskets, blah blah, you know the rest cause you posted in that thread.. anyways, I timed it (the first time) with the light and got it on the mark, idled/reved fine, but ran like crap low RPM... needed 3/4 of the pedal to make it go. So I actually read the under hood sticker and found the directions to set the timing.. thread here http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=423828

I left the distrib where it was and pulled the Timing wire, and wow.. the TBI was sucking tons of air and idled like crap.. for shits and giggles I checked the timing and the mark wasnt even in range, infact it was almost opposite of where the marks were. I got it on 0 degrees before TDC, plugged the wire in and viola.. runs like new again.

I'd say put your timing gears on how the marks should be (pointing to each other), line up the balancer mark with the timing mark and then check your rotor postion. Re-seat your distrib if necessary, and see if it starts. If it does, unplug the timing wire and set your timing accordingly.
