Alternative VIN# Locations

Long story short - My 2002 Explorer has a VIN number on the driver side door sticker that does not match the one on the dashboard (viewed thru the front windsheild). In order to register it in my state I need to go thru a VIN inspection and show the DMV another VIN # location. Can someone let me know where they have found VIN #'s on their explorers like in the engine compartment? Thank you!

It might be at the very front of the engine compartment (around the latch mechanism), near the back on the wall on the driver side, or on the engine itself somewhere. It could also be around the rear hatch. Won't they let you just compare the one on the title to the one that matches on the car?

Re: Alternative VIN# Locations

See the thing is b.c the driver side door was replaced. So that they look and compare the VIN to the title from TWO locations. I only have one location right now and need to locate another place where the VIN is. And it seems very welll hidden on this car. I just cant seem to find another place

Did you replace the door or did a bodyshop?
If a bodyshop changed the door with a salvage door, the bodyshop
should have a record for the purchased salvage door.
If you bought the door, then you have a record that the door
was replaced with a door that you bought.
Also, are you the original owner?
From my knowledge, the vin number on the dash is the major ID
for that vehicle.
What year is you explorer?
MFG"s started an anti theft program awhile back where stickers
are placed on fenders, major body panels. They usually include
the vin number or bar code. These stickers are usually about 1/2" X 2".
Good Luck.

Re: Alternative VIN# Locations

Thanks for the reply. I called Ford and they told me there are only TWO locations of the VIN number on the dash and on the driver's side door. Which I find hard to believe. I did end up asking the dealer for the reciept and the VIN check went smoothly. Thanks for your help tho!
