Locate the AC drain make sure it is open. They become blocked with leaves and debris and will cause the problem you describe. I am not certain where the drain is located on the Escort but check along the firewall.

Follow the hoses leading out of the AC unit. You should be able to find the drain.
Another thing... are you sure it is the AC? Make sure it is not rain. (it could be a coincidence that the AC or vent is on)
I had a Probe that had a bad seal on the windshield and my passenger side would get soaked.

I've looked for that drain before and had no luck. Mine works right. The water drips out. But I can't see where it's coming from. I have my car up on ramps right now. I'll have to looks and see what I find.

Re: wet carpet passenger side

Sounds SO familiar! I can't remember but I think I may have pulled the motor, reached up in and found some leaves or pine straw. Went so far as to get leaf blower to blow the trash from inside back toward engine. Then went to engine area, reached under/inside cowling to remove all debris. Had no more water leakage!! Did replace wiring connectors and resistor (wires plugged into it - $12). ALWAYS clear ANY debris from vents or around cowling.
