1984 300sd

Im looking at a 1984 300SD here in oklahoma 220,000 miles what i look for ? the owner says it has a rattle in the diesel engine ?

220k miles... its a baby. Diesel engines rattle. The trans would be my biggest concern. how does it shift? does it slip?
